The Hero’s Journey is a literary narrative pattern that sees the story’s protagonist leave their hometown, embark on an adventure, overcome trials, and eventually return home a changed person. Most common in Greek mythology, the Hero’s Journey can be seen everywhere, from contemporary children’s movies (Finding Nemo) to pop culture phenomena (the Lord of the Rings and Star Wars) and even (in rare cases) outside the realm of fiction. Äli Kargoja and her label August have been one of those cases.

Caustic for Concern.
Currently ranked as the second most polluting business in the world, the environmental atrocities caused by over consumption of fast-fashion have gone relatively unnoticed. Discussions on the environment conjure up images of oil rigs, strip mining, and oceans of plastic rather than the 1,800 gallons of water needed to make a pair of jeans. Even the Citarum, an Indonesian river made caustic by the chemical runoff from the country’s printing and dyeing industries, escapes criticism during environmental debates.
As part of an industry-wide revolution, Bojana Draca is bringing eco-conscious design to the mainstream with her label Farrah Floyd. Working to antiquate the stereotypes of environmentally friendly design, Draca invents new ways to revolutionize the revolution itself.
SHE Picks: Father’s Day Gift Ideas.
You never mean to leave a gift until the last minute, especially a gift for someone who has spent the entirety of your life raising you. But we will all (sheepishly) admit that time gets away from us. That’s why I did quite a bit of thinking about these perfect father’s day gifts.
SHE Picks: What Dad Wants to do this Father’s Day.
Father’s Day can easily become repetitive and impersonal, with stereotypical celebrations consisting of a barbecue and a gift wrapped tie. Break the mould with one of the hundreds of events happening in Toronto. Whether the dad in your life is passionate about cars, science or art, you can find an event to appeal to any niche interest so there’s no excuse to stick to your traditional celebrations.
Leo to Portray Sufi Mystic.
Hollywood director David Franzoni is set to start casting for a film based on the life of 13th-century Persian poet Rumi. Known for his directorial role for the 2000 film Gladiator, which was celebrated as one of the most historically accurate portrayals of the Roman Empire, expectations for Franzoni’s interpretation were high. That is until he mentioned Leonardo DiCaprio was being considered for the film’s lead role.
The Oscar winning actor will definitely attract audiences, but does mass appeal justify the continuation of Hollywood’s xenophobia and racism?
Explore Nine West’s Autumn Lineup.
While we still have three weeks of summer left, a sneak peek at Nine West’s autumn 2016 line up has rekindled our love for cold weather footwear. From flat loafers to sky-high thigh-highs, every shoe at the AW16 preview we attended this past week was glamorously finished with tassels, carved details or a patent finish. A dominant theme this upcoming season seems to be a sense of exploration, with each shoe including elements like highly textured soles, woolen linings, and snakeskin textures to encourage wanderlust.
The 80’s and 90’s Revived at the Billboard Music Awards.
This summer’s fashion was forecasted by the 2016 Billboard Music Awards’ strappy, shoulder-bearing silhouettes and pastel pallet. Playing host for the night, Ciara’s seven outfit changes hit nearly all of this season’s trends, starting with a skin-bearing silver dress with matching heels that looked to be inspired by this year’s met gala theme.
The Aga Khan’s Bollywood Classics Series.
This summer the Aga Khan extended the usual performing arts season well into August with their Bollywood Classic Series. Featuring films like the record breaking Mughal-e-Azam and Umrao Jaan, the Aga Khan invites Torontonians to extend both the performing arts season and their interest in foreign film.
SHE Picks: Unexpected Sun Protection.
Doctors have been warning us of the dangers of sun exposure for years, but the lack of diverse SPF-infused products left us with only basic options (think all-over sun creams, moisturizers with SPF, or noses covered with white zinc-oxide if you go back just as far as the 80’s). Now that people take their skin seriously, skincare brands are starting to supply the more innovative solutions needed to cater niche needs.
Taking Over Cannes Bollywood Style.
Cannes is the best source for first looks at the upcoming year’s pop culture. Not only premiering some of the most highly anticipated films, the festival also sets the stage for formalwear trends of the coming seasons. With the festival wrapping up, now is the best time to examine some of the best and worst dressed of past years.
